Agents & Provocateurs & before & after

2010. Jun. 8. | 19:30

presentation of Bea Hock

guest: Katalin Tímár

The exhibition Agents & Provocateurs surveys certain forms of confrontation: agency and provocation, both understood as dissenting artistic attitudes. The project explores to what degree these stances have proved to be viable forms of protest in different and changing political contexts.

The research-based exhibition brings together artistic interventions from state-socialist Eastern Europe and examples from more liberal-democratic political contexts. It juxtaposes provocation and irritation as frequent vehicles of artists‘ defiance with instances when artists think of themselves as social agents and find ways to work politically with the „enemy”.

The exhibition was first shown at the Institute of Contemporary Art—Dunaujvaros, Hungary, in October-November 2009 and is presently on view in the newly opened venue of Hartware MedienKunstVerein—Dortmund. The project presentation in Labor continues the series of events—so far organised in Bratislava and Berlin–that aim to communicate to a broader audience the concept, research findings as well as the continuities and differences between the two „editions” of the exhibition.

Curators of the exhibition:

Beata Hock and Franciska Zólyom; Inke Arns and co-curator of the Dortmund edition

We are not ducks on a pond but ships at sea

2010. Jun. 1. | 20:00

All are welcome at the book launch party of

We Are Not Ducks on a Pond, but Ships at Sea – independent art initiatives, Budapest 1989-2009

edited by Impex Contemporary Art Provider.

Péter György theorist with the editors Rita Kálmán and Katarina Sevic discusses the structure of the book, the criteria for topic selection, as well as the editing process.

The event will also be attended by other Impex members and the authors of the book.

Music will be provided by DJ Káosz.

…..

The independent art scene is rather difficult to pinpoint: its boundaries and definitions are continuously changing as a function of the political, economic and cultural environment.

The book entitled We are Not Ducks on a Pond, but Ships at Sea offers readers a hitherto untold story: it endeavors to introduce the independent art scene of Budapest in the past 20 years, mapping out its schemes of organisation, its actors and spaces, in an attempt to understand its autonomy and transience as well as its relationship with the economic and ideological frameworks of society.

In the 128-page volume, Nina Czegledy, Dóra Hegyi, members of Impex, Jan Kennis, Péter Lowas, József Mélyi, Gergely Nagy, Levente Polyák and Katalin Timár explore the concepts of correction / informality / centre-periphery / chaos – order / community and self-organisation in the form of essays and (self-)interviews.

The book focuses on a special and elusive segment of contemporary Hungarian art and culture through short texts and numerous archive photographs documenting 57 initiatives.

The volume can be purchased at the book launch at a reduced price (HUF 2000), the price is .

Studio of Young Artists Association (FKSE): Speed Date

2010. May. 20. | 19:00

Three artists, one hour

Guests: Zsolt Asztalos, Márta Czene, Kata Tranker

Limitations are given and unavoidable, but they do not necessarily have to be interpreted as constraints. While they delineate boundaries and sometimes truly hinder artistic creativity, they also oftentimes facilitate concentration and the mobilisation of abilities. In our new discussion series, we mark such a limit for our guests; we set the time at 20 minutes. This is how long each guest has for presenting their works in progress and professional issues that are currently important to them. Such time constraints demands focused attention and increased concentration both on the part of the speaker and on the part of the audience – and are resolved by the unfettered discussion which follows the presentations.
